The School For Wives
Presented by Bell Shakespeare
Friday 17 August 8.00pm
“...enormously entertaining and laugh-out-loud funny... never a dull moment.” - Herald Sun
Founded by acclaimed Australian actor and director John Bell in 1990, Bell Shakespeare is Australia’s only national touring theatre company. Its current practice is to tour three main stage productions of either Shakespeare or one of his famous contemporary playwrights to each Australian state in each year, plus a variety of education programs.
Following on from her 2010 success with Twelfth Night, Lee Lewis directs this fresh new translation from Justin Fleming of Molière’s comedic train-wreck of a love story, School for Wives that tangles innocence with arrogance – and the other way around. Jean Baptiste Molière is renowned as France’s master playwright of comedy and satire.
Falling in love is never easy. Take our hero for instance. Now here’s a guy who wants desperately to get married but is afraid that a smart woman will cheat on him. His ingenious solution? Enlist the help of a local convent to raise a girl so stupidly innocent that she won’t know the first thing about cheating – let alone the last. In his mind she will be ever-faithful. The perfect wife. Or is she?
The company, rather than using Renaissance costumes and sets, uses contemporary or anachronistic styles. Unlike many other producers, Bell has his actors accentuating and emphasising the many sexual innuendos and bawdy moments that are in the original texts.
“...a rich and novel interpretation.” - Herald Sun
